UK Risks Falling Behind as Osborne Slams Crypto Policy Paralysis
VISI.NEWS | BANDUNG - The United Kingdom may be left in the dust in the global crypto race, warns former Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne, who harshly criticized the Labour government's cautious stance on the digital asset industry. Osborne claims that the UK is at serious risk of lagging behind the United States, the European Union, and key Asian markets in terms of innovation and regulation. In a recent statement, Osborne drew parallels between the current crypto transformation and the historic "Big Bang" financial reforms of the 1980s a period of rapid modernization in London's financial sector. He argued that the UK is once again facing a critical moment and must act swiftly to capitalize on this historic opportunity. “The rest of the world is moving forward the UK is standing still. If we don’t act now, we’ll lose our seat at the global table of financial innovation,” Osborne warned.

Criticism of Labour Overcautious Approach

According to Osborne, Labour's overly cautious regulatory approach may stifle growth, discourage investment, and ultimately force crypto businesses to relocate to more favorable jurisdictions. While he acknowledges the importance of consumer protection, Osborne insists that it must not come at the cost of innovation and competitiveness. "Regulation is necessary, but paralysis is not. There’s a difference between being responsible and being fearful,” he said. He also emphasized that Britain once led the world in financial reforms and can do so again — but only if policymakers embrace change instead of resisting it.

Calls for Urgent Reform

The former Chancellor called for a comprehensive digital finance strategy, including clearer legal frameworks for crypto assets, support for blockchain-based businesses, and competitive tax policies to attract global players. He urged the government to stop treating crypto as a niche issue and instead recognize it as a cornerstone of future economic development. Industry stakeholders have echoed Osborne’s concerns, warning that continued inaction could push the UK further down the ranks of crypto innovation hubs. Several major crypto firms have already moved their operations to jurisdictions like the U.S., Singapore, and Switzerland, citing unclear and inconsistent policies in the UK. As the global digital finance landscape evolves rapidly, the UK faces mounting pressure to either lead or be left behind. Whether the Labour government will respond decisively or continue down its hesitant path remains to be seen. Not financial advice do your own research @gvr
