VISI.NEWS | BANDUNG - Controversial Proposal from France’s Far-Right Party. France's far-right political group, Rassemblement National (RN), has stirred public debate by proposing a new draft bill aimed at using surplus nuclear energy to power Bitcoin mining operations.
According to RN representatives, the bill seeks to capitalize on unused nuclear capacity in France's energy grid, which they claim is being “wasted” due to limited demand. The party frames this as a strategic move to strengthen national interests by converting excess energy into financial assets.
However, critics argue that the plan is a political stunt masking environmental and ethical concerns under the guise of technological innovation.
Nuclear Energy Meets Bitcoin Mining: A Risky Mix?
France is currently one of the most nuclear-reliant countries in Europe, generating over 70% of its electricity from nuclear plants. While this gives France a stable energy supply, environmental groups warn that leveraging it for energy-intensive crypto mining sends the wrong message during a time of global climate urgency. Environmental activist Chloé Renard said: “Nuclear power should serve public infrastructure, not private profit. Using it to mine Bitcoin is not only irresponsible-it’s exploitative.”Economic Justification or Digital Opportunism?
Supporters of the bill argue that Bitcoin mining could boost economic growth and improve France’s competitiveness in the global digital economy. By using nuclear energy, they claim France could mine Bitcoin more efficiently and sustainably than countries relying on fossil fuels. But economists caution that the profitability of Bitcoin mining is volatile and dependent on global market conditions and halving cycles. A poorly timed investment could end up wasting public resources.Legal and Ethical Concerns
The bill is still in early stages and has not been officially debated in parliament. Legal experts warn that government-backed crypto mining could raise issues related to : Regulatory transparency Conflict of interest Public trust in state energy use Moreover, with the EU moving towards stricter crypto sustainability standards, France’s proposal could clash with regional policies.
