Thailand and Cambodia Agree to Ceasefire Following Pressure from Trump and Anwar Ibrahim
VISI.NEWS | BANDUNG - The leaders of Thailand and Cambodia have officially agreed to a ceasefire on week, ending one of Southeast Asia’s deadliest border conflicts in over a decade. The breakthrough came after intense diplomatic pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who acted as key mediators in the peace negotiations. The long-running conflict between the two countries, primarily centered around the disputed area near the ancient Preah Vihear temple on the border of Thailand's Sisaket Province and Cambodia’s Preah Vihear Province, has resulted in hundreds of casualties, including military personnel and civilians.

International Pressure Leads to Breakthrough

According to a senior official from Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Donald Trump who has remained active in international diplomacy after his presidency played a crucial role in initiating informal talks between the Thai military leadership and Cambodia’s civilian government. “Trump used his personal influence with both political and military elites to push both sides to come to the table. His direct approach proved effective in reducing early tensions,” the source stated, speaking on condition of anonymity. Meanwhile, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim led a series of trilateral meetings in Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta involving ASEAN representatives and United Nations observers. As a prominent figure within the region and an advocate for stability in the Mekong subregion, Anwar emphasized the importance of peaceful resolution. "Continued conflict threatens not only our regional economy but also invites unwanted external intervention. Peace in the Mekong region must be a shared ASEAN priority," Anwar said in a statement.

Key Terms of the Ceasefire Agreement

The ceasefire agreement, signed in Vientiane, Laos a neutral location chosen by both parties includes the following provisions: * A complete halt of all military operations along the border starting August 1, 2025, at 00:00 local time. * Establishment of a 10-kilometer demilitarized buffer zone to prevent further skirmishes. * Deployment of joint ASEAN and International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) observers. * Ongoing border negotiations under the facilitation of ASEAN and UN-appointed neutral mediators.

Regional and Global Reactions

ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn welcomed the ceasefire, describing it as “a triumph of regional diplomacy and multilateral cooperation.” The United States Department of State also issued a statement, praising Trump’s involvement in informal diplomacy, calling it a “constructive contribution to global peace efforts.” Despite the promising development, international observers warn that implementing the ceasefire on the ground may prove challenging, especially in historically contested and ethnically sensitive areas. Dr. Surin Mahakan, a Southeast Asian geopolitical analyst from Chulalongkorn University, cautioned, “A ceasefire is a significant first step, but rebuilding trust between border communities will be the real challenge. Years of fear and resentment won't disappear overnight.” The ceasefire agreement between Thailand and Cambodia represents a critical milestone toward long-term peace in Southeast Asia. The involvement of Donald Trump and Anwar Ibrahim underscores the role of high-level personal diplomacy and regional unity in resolving complex territorial disputes. The international community will now watch closely to see whether the peace will hold or merely pause another cycle of border tension. @gvr
