VISI.NEWS | CRYPTO - Bitcoin (BTC) faced a slight price correction after hitting a fresh all-time high above $122,800 earlier this week, as macroeconomic factors and profit-taking came into play. Adding to market jitters, a dormant whale from the Satoshi era began shifting tens of thousands of BTC, raising concerns of a potential sell-off.
Blockchain analytics platform Lookonchain reported that a wallet holding 80,009 BTC—worth roughly $9.46 billion—had moved half of its holdings, approximately 40,009 BTC (around $4.68 billion), to Galaxy Digital. The firm later sent 6,000 BTC to major crypto exchanges Binance and Bybit, indicating preparations for potential partial liquidation.
Analysts, however, view the market's muted reaction as a sign of strength. Vijay Boyapati compared the transfer volume to Germany's large-scale government BTC sales in 2023, noting that the market absorbed the event with only moderate volatility. He called Bitcoin one of the most liquid markets in the world, rivaling gold and U.S. Treasuries.
Bloomberg’s ETF analyst James Seyffart echoed this sentiment, explaining that it now takes significant capital to meaningfully shift Bitcoin's price. Despite occasional price spikes due to liquidity gaps, overall stability points to a maturing asset class.
Industry experts also highlighted that this Bitcoin rally differs from previous cycles. It’s led by spot market demand, not excessive leverage, and comes in a relatively stable trading environment. Alexander Zahnd, interim CEO of Zilliqa, emphasized the role of institutional confidence in supporting current price levels.
Meanwhile, Shawn Young, Chief Analyst at MEXC Research, noted that such large transfers of long-inactive assets usually signal macroeconomic shifts. According to him, the Bitcoin was moved through custodial and brokerage-linked wallets, suggesting a reallocation strategy rather than an immediate sell-off.
Young said the real focus should be on whether the assets are sent to exchanges or stored in custody. The former could create short-term supply pressure, while the latter points to long-term positioning.
Despite uncertainty about the whale’s future moves, Bitcoin remains strong, trading just 3.7% below its recent peak. At the time of writing, BTC stood at $118,251, up 1.08% over the last 24 hours. @ffr
