Trump’s Aggressive Trade Tariffs Hit Indonesia: New Sanctions Spark Global Backlash
VISI.NEWS | BANDUNG - U.S. President Donald Trump has reignited global trade tensions by announcing a new wave of aggressive tariffs targeting several major trading partners. Among the countries affected is Indonesia, now facing increased import duties as part of what the administration calls a necessary move to "protect American industries." The announcement triggered immediate concern from global markets and foreign governments, many of which are calling the policy a dangerous return to economic nationalism.

Tariffs Take Effect August 1

During a press briefing at the White House, President Trump defended the new tariffs as a critical component of his "America First" economic agenda. The new import taxes ranging from 15% to 40% depending on the product and country of origin officially went into effect on August 1, 2025.

Targeted Countries: Indonesia Among Them

According to the list published by the U.S. Trade Representative, the following nations are affected: * China * Vietnam * Mexico * Indonesia * Turkey * India Products hit by the new tariffs include steel, automotive parts, electronics, and agricultural goods. Indonesia, in particular, faces a 20% import tariff on processed rubber and textiles two of its key exports to the U.S.

Indonesia Responds, Global Leaders React

Indonesia's Ministry of Trade responded with disappointment, calling the U.S. action an "extreme form of protectionism that undermines global trade cooperation." The European Union and several G20 members have also voiced concern, urging the United States to reconsider. Analysts warn that this could mark the start of a new round of retaliatory trade measures, further destabilizing global supply chains and economic recovery efforts.

Immediate Market Reactions

Financial markets reacted swiftly. Currencies from the targeted countries dropped, including the Indonesian rupiah, which declined 1.2% against the U.S. dollar. Shares of major Indonesian export firms also slumped during morning trading. “We’re at serious risk of losing one of our biggest export markets,” said Taufik Rahman, chairman of the Indonesian Rubber Industry Association. “This is a huge blow to our supply chain planning and future revenue.” President Trump’s latest trade decision adds fuel to growing concerns over unilateral U.S. economic policies. With emerging economies like Indonesia directly in the crosshairs, and global allies expressing disapproval, the world now faces renewed uncertainty in international trade. Will diplomacy prevail, or are we heading into another full-scale trade war? One thing is clear Trump’s tariffs have reignited global trade anxiety. @gvr
